Clinical Nurses¡¯ Knowledge and Stress in Relation to Care of Delirium Patients

Abstract
Purpose: This is a descriptive study aimed to examine hospital nurses¡¯ knowledge on delirium and their stress in relation to care of patients with delirium.

Method: This study was conducted in two general hospitals located in P city during the period from April 15 to May 30, 2015. Instruments used were knowledge test on delirium developed by Cho and revised by Seo and stress related to care of delirium patients developed by Kim and revised by Seo. Data were analyzed using SPSS/PC Windows (Version 18.0).

Result: The study found that average scores of subjects¡¯ knowledge on delirium was 30.95 out of 50, which is equivalent to 61.95 out of 100 points. The study also found that stress level of nurses in relation to the care of delirium patient was 55.11 out of 100 points. Level of stress was highest on environmental stress (67.4 points) followed by stress associated with nursing practices and nursing work (65.57 points).

Conclusion: Hospital nurses showed low level of knowledge on delirium and perceived less stress in relation to care of delirium patients. It is necessary to provide education to hospital nurses on the care of delirium patients.
